Why Mixed Ages?

Music Together® mixed-age classes are designed for children from birth through age five and the grownups who love them®. Instead of separating children by age, mixed-age classes create a natural, family-style learning environment where babies, toddlers, and preschoolers can learn from one another.

Young children develop at their own pace, and music learning is no different. In a mixed-age class, each child can participate in a way that feels right for their stage of development. A baby may watch closely, listen, bounce, or respond with sounds and movement. A toddler may wander, dance, tap, or explore instruments. A preschooler may sing more words, suggest ideas, or become a musical leader for younger children.

This variety is one of the strengths of the class. Younger children often learn by watching older children, while older children build confidence by modeling musical participation for the younger ones. Siblings can also attend together, making class easier for families and creating a shared musical experience.

Mixed-age classes also reflect real life. Children do not only learn from peers their exact same age. They learn from parents, siblings, cousins, friends, and the community around them. In class, children are surrounded by many different voices, movements, rhythms, and ways of participating.

At Joyful Hearts Music, we love mixed-age classes because they allow every child to grow in their own way. There is no pressure to perform, sit still, or participate perfectly. Children are free to observe, explore, move, sing, and join in when they are ready.

The result is a joyful, flexible class where the whole family can make music together.
